Brad Marchand is many things: father, husband, son, friend, Canadian, Nova Scotian, Bostonian, teammate, and Jake Thibeault’s favorite player. “Marchy” represents the many facets of Marchand, and embodies the essence of his fierceness and passions in life. Qualities both Brad and Jake share. (Read about Jake this fundraising project below.)
I’m a hockey dad.
So when I heard Jake Thibeault share his story on Spittin Chiclets, it hit deep. Jake, a senior at Milton Academy, suffered a spinal chord injury while playing hockey in September of 2021. Listening to him speak about his focus and determination to get back on his feet pulled me in to his story. Hearing him talk about his dad “standing at the glass when it happened” destroyed me. I had to do something. One of my first steps was to reach out to another hockey dad, who happens to be Jake’s favourite hockey player, Brad Marchand.
When I approached Brad with the concept of creating this very personal piece to raise money for Jake’s road to recovery from paralysis, he was all in. Brad shared stories from his past and how it all led to his incredible success on and off the ice.
He was remarkably open and I was struck by the fact that he and Jake share the same grit and determination. Many of the things Brad revealed are woven into the glove - small hints at what matters most to him. I can’t thank him enough for sharing.
Two other hockey dads were also crucial: Bob Sweeney of the Bruins Foundation and Paul Cannata head coach at Milton Academy. Stand up guys who have gone above and beyond for Jake.
Lastly it’s been an absolute honour to get to know Jake and his dad, Mike. I can only say, their strength, humour, and warmth continues to inspire.
